Prolonging promises [I]: the sunset of Palanga
The long promenade that dominates the centre of the famous tourist resort Palanga (Lithuania) consists of archaic building materials like brick, cobble stone, concrete, metal and wood. The build-up from the inner town to the water is like a theatrical experience, a catwalk that uplifts the flaneur / to be spectator on his expectations. People come from far to sit on a stage like circle, waiting for the sun to set. In old days there was a strong pagan connotation. Today many villagers and visitors still dress up in evening gowns and suits.
‘Tracing the direct street surface led to a pilgrimage experience, working on my hands and knees, more pure than photographing it, a real size proof of the road.’
This work was part of the group installation ‘Mapping the Pier’ curated by Eleonora Farina (Berlin).
